Hospitality

A loyalty program customers actually use

Most loyalty schemes are forgotten by the second visit. The ones that work are simple, instant and built into how people already pay - not another app to download and abandon.

A loyalty program customers actually use

Loyalty is one of the most over-complicated things in hospitality and retail. Businesses launch points schemes, tiers and apps, and customers forget them by the second visit. The programs that actually work share a few traits, and none of them is complexity. The goal is repeat visits, not a clever mechanic.

Simple beats clever

The best loyalty schemes can be explained in one sentence and understood at the counter. Buy nine, get the tenth. Spend this, get that. The moment a customer has to do mental arithmetic or read terms, you have lost most of them. Complexity feels generous to the business and looks like friction to the customer.

Built into payment, not bolted on

Asking customers to download an app, create an account and remember to open it is asking a lot for a free coffee. The schemes with real uptake are the ones that just happen - recognised at the point of sale when they pay, with their existing card or a tap, no extra step. The less a customer has to do, the more they participate.

Reward the behaviour you actually want

Be clear about what loyalty is for. More frequent visits? Higher spend? Trying new items? Quieter days? Design the reward around the behaviour that helps your business, not points for their own sake. A scheme that nudges Tuesday visits or moves people to higher-margin items earns its keep.

Use the data, do not hoard it

A loyalty program quietly produces something valuable: who your regulars are and what they buy. Used well - a thank-you, a relevant offer, a heads-up they will care about - that builds real relationships and repeat business. The same join-up that powers loyalty can also feed smarter ordering and less waste. Used badly, it is spam, so be useful or be quiet.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a loyalty program successful?
Simplicity, low friction and being built into how customers already pay. The best schemes can be explained in one sentence, are recognised automatically at the point of sale rather than requiring an app to download, reward the behaviour the business actually wants, and use the resulting data to be genuinely useful rather than to spam.
Do I need an app for a loyalty program?
Usually no - and often an app hurts uptake, because asking customers to download, sign up and remember to open it is a lot to ask. Schemes that recognise the customer automatically when they pay, with their existing card or a tap, tend to get far more participation.
How can a loyalty program help beyond repeat visits?
It shows you who your regulars are and what they buy. Used well, that data lets you send relevant offers, reward the behaviour you want (quieter days, higher-margin items) and even inform ordering to cut waste. The value is in using the insight thoughtfully, not just collecting points.
